Scope and local coverage
Replacing a cracked concrete drive or tarmac that has broken at the edges starts with what is underneath. For a Northampton driveway survey, we look at the existing construction, falls and edges before quoting, rather than recommend the same build-up for every property.
Where a concrete slab has failed, it normally has to come out rather than be covered, because movement in the slab can reflect through new tarmac. That is what happened on our Wollaston project below.
Northampton and the surrounding Northamptonshire villages are our core working area.
What the work covers
- Removal of cracked concrete or failed tarmac and disposal of spoil
- Checking levels and falls so water moves away from the house and boundaries
- Sub-base preparation before tarmac is laid
- New tarmac surface laid and compacted
- Block kerb edging where the drive meets lawns and borders
- Advice on dropped kerbs and drainage before you commit
What we check first
Existing surface
Whether concrete can stay, needs cutting out in sections or has to be removed completely.
Falls and drainage
Where rainwater will go once the new surface is down, including any neighbouring boundary.
Edges
Block kerbs hold the tarmac edge and give a clean line to lawns and planting.
Access
Vehicle access for removal and delivery, and how long the drive will be out of use.

Local planning and drainage notes
Front garden driveways: Planning Portal guidance
Planning Portal says a new or replaced impermeable driveway at the front of a house over 5 square metres usually needs planning permission unless rainwater drains to a lawn or border or the surface is permeable. Dropped kerbs and other restrictions may need separate approval, and flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas are treated differently.

West Northamptonshire Council promotes early ground investigations when sustainable drainage is proposed, and says not to assume infiltration will work. For a driveway that means checking where water will actually go before choosing a surface.

Do you only work in Northampton town?
No. Northampton is part of our core area, and we also work across Northamptonshire. The completed example on this page is in Wollaston, a village near Northampton.
Can new tarmac go straight over cracked concrete?
Usually not where the concrete has moved or failed. We inspect it on the site visit and tell you whether it can stay or must be removed, as it was in Wollaston.
Will I need planning permission?
Planning Portal guidance says impermeable front-garden driveways over 5 square metres usually need permission unless water drains to a lawn or border or the surface is permeable. Check with your council for your property.
How do I get a price?
